Randi W. Stebbins and Flora Tietgen were invited to give a talk at the Hennar rödd/Her voice conference on the health of women of foreign origin in October 2021 in Reykjavík. They presented a talk titled “Intimate partner violence toward women of foreign origin as a public health crisis”:
The World Health Organization states that intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health issue. The #metoo narratives by immigrant women in Iceland revealed the prevalence of intimate partner violence and the reactions from state institutions and services providers. The narratives show that women of foreign origin do not always receive the services they seek or deserve. Based on this, our research group began a large study in 2019 to investigate the prevalence and depth of IPV in the Icelandic population of immigrant women and the people who provide them services. We will introduce our research project and present preliminary results from interviews with service providers, setting them into a public health perspective.
