Brynja E. Halldórsdóttir gave an online lecture with the title ” Exacerbating an already dangerous problem: Gender-based violence in COVID times

During the height of COVID-19 the UN and the WHO called attention to what they termed the silent pandemic, as gender-based violence significantly increased in societies as a result of national shutdowns to limit the spread of the pandemic. This talk looks at the Icelandic context using critical discourse analysis by examining public new items discussing GBV between from January 2020-March 2021. Preliminary findings indicate that there was increased public awareness of the need for long-term support and financial support to organizations who work with people who experience GBV was temporarily increased. However, services outside of the capital region remain limited.
